The First Two Weeks of Medical School
When I was an undergrad, I did not understand why we had to take the MCAT, or why medical schools looked for people with awesome G.P.A.’s. Now I do. Medical school is not for the light hearted, it is not for the lazy, it is not for the procrastinator, and it is not for the “I’ll just do enough to get by,” person.
I can honestly say that since my first day of school, and I am not exaggerating in anyway, I have studied. I have had 9 days of school. In those 9 days I have learned the muscles of the arm, forearm, back and neck. I have learn their insertions and origins and all the nerves that innervate them, I have learn what arteries supply these muscles, I have learn about different genetic diseases, I have learned about every type of tissue you have in your body, I have learn about your spine, and how a spinal tap is preformed, I have learn everything we need to know about DNA, I have learned how to recognize different tissues under the microscope, and I have learned the brachial plexis. This all in 9 days. I have cover what you cover in ones semester in 50 minutes. You dedicate your body and soul to this, and it will want it all. Leaving something until the next day will leave you way behind.
This is why they want good grades, and a good MCAT score. They want to know that you can apply yourself.
With this being said, I would rather be here than anywhere else in the world(except with my husband, whom I miss terribly). I am learning about the most wonderful treasure we as humanity have, the human body. When you go into the body, you are an explorer, and it will become your kingdom if you treat it right, and give it what it needs.
More to come….
